Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams is at risk of a two-year prison sentence after admitting to dangerous driving. The 24-year-old could receive the maximum penalty following his guilty plea.
Incident Details
On August 20, 2023, Williams was caught driving at an excessive speed of 99 mph in an Audi A3 near Handforth, Cheshire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), he was also driving without third-party insurance.
At the time of the incident, Williams, who was still under contract with Manchester United but on loan to Ipswich Town, had a female passenger in the vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing him holding a balloon to his mouth, while the woman was seen filming on her phone.
The reckless driving ended in a collision at approximately 18:17 BST. Williams’ Audi A3 crashed into a blue Ford Fiesta before slamming into the central reservation. Reports stated that his car sustained severe damage, while the Ford Fiesta suffered a missing wheel and damage to the offside. The crash also left the central reservation damaged.

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Emergency services attended the scene, and Williams was taken to the hospital for treatment before being transferred to Middlewich custody suite. He underwent a breathalyzer test, which came back negative.
Andrew Madden, a senior prosecutor for the CPS, stated that Williams’ actions showed a clear disregard for road safety.
“Witnesses described his driving as erratic, with sudden acceleration and harsh braking,” Madden explained. “He was clearly not in control of the vehicle. The speed was dangerously high, and eventually, he lost control, leading to the crash.”
Madden emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse, saying it was “fortunate that no one suffered serious injury or lost their life.”
Future Uncertain for Williams
Following the incident, Williams’ contract with Manchester United was not renewed in June, leaving him currently without a club.
He is set to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court on May 9, where he could face up to two years behind bars if handed the maximum punishment.
